BENNINGTON, Vt. — On Monday, the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) announced its weekly award winners for the period ending April 10, 2016 with Southern Vermont College sophomore Nicole Matthews (Pittstown, N.Y.) reeling in the league's Softball Player of the Week after a memorable two days.
Matthews' weekend was nothing short of spectacular as the Mountaineer went 13-for-14 (.929) at the plate in four games for SVC, helping the team go 3-1 in Conference action. She tallied three doubles, three triples and a home run for a 1.786 slugging percentage, her homer being in the bottom of the seventh on Saturday for Southern Vermont to walk-off with its first win of the year.
The sophomore captain totaled 10 RBIs and eight runs scored across the four contests while working five walks to register a .947 on-base percentage. She had two triples and a double to go 3-for-3 in the Mountaineers' first game at Daniel Webster College on Sunday, and she then had another triple and a double in the day-cap. Matthews additionally picked up her first two collegiate wins from the circle, grabbing one each day while striking out eight.
This is Matthews' first NECC accolade and the second time this year that the Mountaineers have grabbed the league's top weekly honor after senior captain Rachel Robtoy (Baltic, Conn.) was named as such on March 28.
Matthews was joined on Monday in receiving Conference laurels by freshman teammate Lizzy Bench (Saint Petersburg, Fla.) who garnered the NECC Softball Rookie of the Week award.
Matthews and the Mountaineers return to action this week with four league doubleheaders, the first being a 3 p.m. twin bill at Regis College on Tuesday.
