BENNINGTON, Vt. — A pair of Southern Vermont College softball players reeled in All-New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) accolades Monday afternoon as the league announced its 2015 all-conference squads and major award winners.
SVC senior Emily Fleming (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and junior Rachel Robtoy (Baltic, Conn.) each took home an All-NECC Honorable Mention; it is the second straight Honorable Mention for Fleming while Robtoy is being recognized by the league for the first time in her tenure as at Mountaineer. Southern Vermont second-year head coach Alyssa Davis commented, “The two together played key roles for us this season, and I am happy that they are able to be honored for that.”
Fleming was stellar from both the batter’s box and pitcher’s circle this season for SVC, tallying the most hits on the team (28) and a tie for the most wins on the rubber (5). She knocked in 19 runs and recorded four doubles, a triple and four homers. The senior hurler turned in the best-ever SVC single season earned run average with a 3.70, and her 114 strikeouts topped the previous Southern Vermont single season best by 25; those pitching marks ranked her fifth in the NECC in both categories.
“Emily was very a large part of our success this season, pitching a majority of our innings,” continued Davis. “She worked hard during the preseason and it really showed in her play.”
Robtoy, a third-year captain for Southern Vermont, scored more times than any Mountaineer in 2015 with 22 runs on the season. She was third on the team with 23 hits, registering a .311 batting average while knocking in 11 runs. The junior’s 13 walks tie her for the second-most in SVC single season program history.
“Rachel stayed very consistent throughout the year,” said Davis. “She was always there when we needed her for a big hit or play in the field.”
The Mountaineers narrowly missed the NECC postseason after tying the program wins record with an 11-14 overall mark.
