MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Southern Vermont College softball team lost to Massasoit Community College, 8-3, and then defeated Mohawk Valley Community College, 11-5, in two non-NCAA contests Tuesday during the Snowbird Softball Invitational in South Carolina.

The day's opening game saw the Mountaineers only have three runs on five hits. Sophomore pitcher Hayley McDonald (Latham, N.Y.) went all seven innings in the circle, letting up five earned runs while striking out seven and walking only two batters.
Freshman captain Rachel Robtoy (Baltic, Conn.) was 2-4 at the plate with a run scored, and sophomore captain Meagan Fleming (Gansevoort, N.Y.) went 3-4 with two stolen bases and a run scored. Junior Erika Garay (Walnut, Calif.) knocked in a run on a sacrifice fly while freshman shortstop Julianna Burnley (Scotia, N.Y.) and freshman outfielder Katie Raymond (Bristol, Conn.) each had an RBI with Burnley also recording a run scored.

The day cap featured Mountaineer bats totalling 11 runs on 12 hits while only surrendering five earned. Sophomore pitcher Emily Fleming (Gansevoort, N.Y.) went all seven innings in the circle for Southern Vermont. She struck out nine batters while giving up five earned runs. Garay went 2-3 at the plate with three runs scored and a run batted in.
Meagan Fleming recorded six RBIs with three doubles on a 3-4 game while twin sister Emily added an RBI and run scored on the offensive end. Burnley was 1-3 while scoring a run, and junior Nathalie Ruelas (Paramount, Calif.) was 1-3 with two runs scored. Sophomore third baseman Brianne Nichols (Colonie, N.Y.) was 2-4 at the dish with a double and three RBIs as freshman Sarah Kennedy (Medford, N.Y.) went 2-3 with a run scored and a stolen base.
The Mountaineers return to NCAA action Wednesday with a doubleheader against Division II Clarion University at 9 and 11 a.m. in Myrtle Beach. Tuesday's results do not count for SVC's overall season record.
