Softball Opens Season, Falls Twice

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Southern Vermont Softball team opened its regular season play against SUNYIT and King's College in Myrtle Beach, SC. The Mountaineers were defeated 24-3 (five innings) against SUNYIT and lost 12-0 (five innings) against Kings College.

In game one the Mountaineers gave up 12 runs in the first inning. SUNYIT had 26 hits on the day and played perfect on the field with no errors. SVC had four hits and three errors.

McGurn was the winning pitcher for SUNYIT throwing two innings of two hit ball. McGurn had three strikeouts and only allowed one earned run. Katelyn Boyd was on the losing end for SVC allowing 16 earned runs.

SVC freshman, Sara Simonetti had a breakout performance going 2 for 3 at the plate with all three RBI's. Alyssa Davis and Jocelyn Donlon each picked up a hit for the Mountaineers.

In the second game of the day SVC was no hit by Kings College. Brittany Haight threw five innings of perfect ball against the Mountaineers. She had seven strikeouts, two looking on the day. Boyd was on the mound for the Mountaineers giving up seven hits, seven walks for 12 runs. Boyd only allowed six earned runs in the game.

Jennifer Harnischfeger and Kayla Rutkoski went 2-3 with for Kings. Brittny Bayes had a two run homer in the third to right field.

Kings played perfect from the field while SVC had five errors on the game.

SVC returns to action tomorrow in Myrtle Beach at 9:00 a.m. against Dakota State University. SVC then plays Eastern University at 11:00 a.m.
