TROY, N.Y. – The Southern Vermont College softball team lost to non-conference foe the Sage College Gators losing game one 11-3 and game two 9-8 Wednesday afternoon Sage improved to 6-24 overall, while SVC drops to 2-17.
Sage’s freshman pitcher Gabriella Skillen picked up the win after a complete game performance that saw her strikeout three and yield just two earned runs off six hits. The victory put her at 4-11 on the year.
She was helped offensively by sophomore second baseman Jennifer Ahearn and senior short stop Kellie Jones. Ahearn, this week’s Skyline Conference Softball Player of the Week, was 3-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Jones roped her career record 35th double and was 2-4 with a pair of runs scored in the game as the Gators racked up 14 hits in the contest.
Rookie catcher Mallory Ingalls was 3-3 with three RBIs after adding a double and a sacrifice fly.
SVC’s sophomore Allison Murphy was 2-3 with a run scored and RBI, while sophomore Alyssa Davis collected her third home run of the year.
Sophomore Gabrielle Remillard took the loss after 5.1 innings of work with eight earned runs off 14 hits with three walks, dropping to 2-9.
The Gators were able to hold on for the 9-8 win in the nightcap after the contest saw four lead changes.
Sophomore Meghan Welcome roped a double and finished the game with four RBIs after a 2-4 effort, with her fifth double of the year. Ahearn was 3-4 with three more RBIs’ to hold the Gator lead in the category with 19 this season.
SVC’s Davis had a strong day as she added a pair of doubles in the second game and was 4-5 with an RBI and a run scored.
Freshman pitcher Talan Barron suffered the loss (0-7) after giving up 11 hits with three earned runs.
The Mountaineers are back in action Friday, April 23rd, when it hosts the Wheelock College Wildcats with the first game starting at 3:00 p.m.
