Spartans Sweep Mountaineers In Non-Conference Action

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Southern Vermont College softball team was swept in a non-conference doubleheader by the Spartans of Castleton State College 8-0 and 10-5 Thursday afternoon. Allison Murphy went 3-for-5 with an RBI and Kayla Whitman went 4-for-4 with one RBI as the two sophomores led the Mountaineers offensively.

Castleton improves to 2-9 on the season while Southern Vermont falls to 0-5.

Bemis (1-4) earned her first win in the circle allowing just one hit on six innings pitched, no walks and 10 strikeouts. Murphy broke up Bemis’ no-hit bid with a double to right field to lead off the fifth inning.

In game one, the Spartans offense got started early pushing three runs across in the first inning. With runners on second and third, Bemis planted a single to left centerfield for a 2-0 lead. Castleton scratched home the third run of the inning on a fielding error that scored Bemis from third.

In the third with two outs, freshman Abbey Hewes doubled to right centerfield to keep the inning alive. Sarah Flore walked and then both runners advanced one base on a wild pitch before Stephanie Wright lined a single to center to drive home two runs.

Bemis finished off Southern Vermont in the bottom of the sixth driving home two runs on a double to left center to make it 8-0 and enforce the mercy rule. Freshman Talan Barron pitched all five innings for Southern Vermont striking out three and walking five.

In game two, the Mountaineers touched the scoreboard first on an RBI single by Murphy.

Castleton’s first baseman, Julie Benzenberg prevented a run from scoring in the frame gunning down Kayla Whitman at the plate attempting to score on Barron’s single to center. The Spartans responded in the bottom half with three runs.

Bemis drove in Blongy with a line drive single down the left field line, Bridget Dusha notched an RBI base knock and Benzenberg grounded out to the right side plating Bemis from third.

Castleton latched another run to the scoreboard in the second, one run in the fourth and fifth and a four-spot in the sixth to break the game open at 10-4.

Bemis knocked in one run, Dusha picked up her second RBI with a single to left field, Sarah Flore double home a run and Caylee Fleury notched a sacrifice fly to right field for Castleton’s fourth run. Megan Blongy went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and one run knocked home to lead the offensive blast.

Remillard struck out one in five innings for SVC and Barron had two K’s in one inning of relief. Emily Sweeney earned the victory pitching five innings, allowing eight hits, four runs (all earned), one walk and five strikeouts.

Bemis picked up a save in relief throwing two innings, yielding a hit, one earned run, three walks and one strikeout.

SVC returns to action Saturday when it travels to Mitchell College for a New England Collegiate Conference doubleheader that starts at 1:00 p.m.
