Mountaineer Softball Splits With Hawks In NECC Action

BENNINGTON, Vt. The Southern Vermont College softball team hosted a NECC doubleheader against the Becker College Hawks winning game one 6-4 and losing game two 19-16 Sunday afternoon at Willow Park Field. Strong defense and solid pitching helped secure SVC’s first NECC victory of the season, while a 10 run top of the seventh Hawks comeback thwarted a Mountaineer sweep in the nightcap.

The Mountaineers walk away from the split 3-20 (1-9 NECC), and the Hawks improved to 9-21 overall (4-6 NECC).

In game one SVC had a 2-1 lead after three innings of play, scoring on an error by the Hawks and an RBI single from senior Amy Balawender (2-for-2).

Becker’s bats got hot in the fourth as they rallied for the lead with a three run in-the-park home run from junior Felicia Laufer to make it 4-2.

In the bottom of the fifth the Mountaineers had a rally of its own scoring four runs to take a 6-4 lead. Sophomore Kayla Whitman crushed a home run to center field to start the surge and pitcher sophomore Gabby Remillard smoked a three run triple over the Hawks left fielder.

Remillard (3-10) got the complete game win striking out three and walking four for SVC. Becker sophomore Jess Lewis (4-11) took the loss in the circle despite a solid outing as she struck out 10 and walked three.

In game two the Mountaineers entered the top of the seventh inning with a 12-9 lead over the Hawks but could not finish the frame allowing 10 runs. Hawks freshman pitcher Paige Needham struck out six and got her fifth win of the season in the complete game win.

In a game that had a total of 35 runs Laufer led all with a game high six RBI’s, going 4-for-6 and scoring three times. Whitman, Balawender (four RBI’s), freshman Talan Barron (four RBI’s), sophomore Alyssa Davis (three RBI’s), sophomore Allison Murphy (three RBI’s) , and junior Tiarra Hall each had at least three hits for the Mountaineers.

Southern Vermont is back in action on Tuesday, April 27th, when it hosts Wheelock College for an NECC doubleheader starting at 4:00 p.m. at Willow Park Field.
