NASHUA, N.H. - The Southern Vermont softball team was swept by Daniel Webster College in a NECC doubleheader losing 13-3 and 3-0 Sunday afternoon. Amy Balawender (Adams, Mass.) led the Mountaineers offensively going 2-for-4 on the day with an RBI and a run scored.
In the opener, Tiarra Hall (Washington, D.C.) got SVC on the board when she singled in Cala Colvin (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.) to make it a 1-1 ballgame.
After a two run second inning for the Eagles they broke open a 3-1 game with three in the third and added seven in the fourth. The Mountaineers persevered and in the fourth inning Balawender hit an RBI single knocking in Alyssa Davis (Lyndonville, Vt.) who had started the inning off with a single. The next batter Mariann Mangiapane (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) laid down a nice sacrifice bunt moving Balawender to second. Ailish Ryan (Hoosick, N.Y.) hit a line drive RBI single into the gap to make it a 13-3 game.
DWC's Amy Waller went 2-for-4 in
the leadoff spot, scored three runs and knocked in one. DiSantis
and April Molina added two hits and one RBI each, while Tiana
Winter knocked in two runs on sacrifice hits.
Amanda Wilson earned the win (2-6) allowing two earned runs on five
hits over five innings, striking out four and walking one.
Danielle Tischer (Salem, Conn.) took the loss for
the Mountaineers in game one.
In game two Balawender got Southern
Vermont's lone hit in a game that was dominted by Eagles pitching.
Freshman Sam Langlois tossed a one hit shutout in the nightcap,
striking out 13 and walking just two, while Theresa DiSantis and
Kristina Reiger notched two hits and drove in a run.
The Eagles (5-13-1 overall, 3-4-1 NECC) jumped ahead 1-0 in the
third as Reiger singled home Chesnulevich.
Chesnulevich followed ripping a triple to right to lead off the
fifth and DiSantis followed with a single for a 2-0 game. DiSantis
would later score on an infield error for the 3-0 final.
Tischer took the loss (0-6), allowing two earned runs on nine hits,
for the Mountaineers (0-8 overall, 0-4 NECC).
The Mountaineers host SUNY-Cobleskill (1-6) in non-conference action at the Willow Park Softball Field. The doubleheader kicks off at 3:00 p.m.
