BENNINGTON, Vt. — The Southern Vermont College outdoor track & field coaches made their final regular season selection of the SVC Athlete of the Week for 2016, bestowing the honor on junior captain Shelby Whitman (Bennington, Vt.) for her performance at Sunday’s Regis College Pride Invitational.
Whitman had a terrific finish to her season, placing highly in both of her events during Sunday’s meet. The junior broke her own team record in the women’s 1500 meter run, shaving 10.12 seconds off to come in third overall with a time of 5:12.58. She also placed sixth overall in the women’s 800 meter run at 2:35.76, coming just over five seconds off from her program record in the event.
“Shelby is a very competitive runner,” commented SVC head coach Kathleen Newton. “She is determined and gives all she has in her events. It was wonderful to see her have such a great race and break through!
Whitman took over 13 seconds off the time she posted in her first 800 meter event of the season by the year’s end while clipping over 27 seconds off her season-opening time in the 1500.
“Shelby is a supportive and encouraging captain to all her teammates,” Newton continued. “She takes her training, the program, and her races very seriously – always giving her best. It was a great way to end the track season for her.”
