ATTLEBORO, Mass. – The New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) announced on Monday its weekly award winners for the period ending October 1, 2017 with Southern Vermont College sophomore Davanté Smith (Ellenville, N.Y.) reeling in the Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week honor.
Smith crossed the line first for SVC on Saturday at the Keene State College Invitational. He came in with a time of 28:39 for a pace of 5:46 per mile on the 8,000 meter course. Monday's honor is the sophomore's fifth for his career after he was named the NECC Rookie of the Week four times as a freshman in 2016.
The Mountaineer sophomore was joined in garnering league accolades by Bennington College freshman C.G. Holden (Pittsburgh, Pa.) who collected the Men's Cross Country Rookie of the Week accolade. Southern Vermont also swept the women's side of the laurels as Bennington senior Annika Kristiansen (Keene, N.H.) was named the Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week while SVC freshman Emily Ikonen (Hubbardston, Mass.) took home her second-straight Women's Cross Country Rookie of the Week award.
Smith and the Mountaineers are back at it on Saturday, October 14 when they head to Western New England University for the Golden Bear Invitational; that will serve as Southern Vermont's final meet before the NECC championships on October 28.
