Brandmeyer Tabbed with Fourth NECC Runner of the Week Honor

BENNINGTON, Vt. – For the fourth time this season, Southern Vermont College junior captain Marc Brandmeyer (Bennington, Vt.) has been named the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week, this time for the period ending October 2, 2016 as announced by the league on Monday.

Monday’s honor is also his sixth career Runner of the Week recognition. The captain had his best race of the year on Saturday at the Keene State College Invitational, recording a 26:39 for a split pace of 5:22 per mile on the 8k course. His ninth-place finish saw the Mountaineer take 1:03 off his previous-top time from this season to help Southern Vermont take fifth as a team.

Brandmeyer was joined in sweeping the league’s men’s cross country awards this week by freshman teammate Davante Smith (Ellenville, N.Y.) who picked up his third-straight NECC Rookie of the Week award on Monday. That marked a perfect five out of five weeks this year that Southern Vermont has claimed both of the men’s cross country honors. Smith had a stellar showing at Saturday’s Invitational, placing fourth for Southern Vermont. He came through the line with a 28:14 showing, that new personal best for the rookie moving him up into a three-way tie for eighth on SVC’s all-time 8k record list. It is his third-straight week in reeling in the rookie accolade.

The SVC streak of sweeping the league’s laurels will end next Monday as Brandmeyer, Smith and the Mountaineers are off this weekend for rest and recovery. They will resume the schedule on Saturday, October 15 at Western New England University’s Golden Bear Invitational (11:15 a.m.).
