WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Southern Vermont College men's cross country team lined up with a highly-competitive field Saturday at Williams College's Purple Valley Classic, racing against teams from all divisions at Mount Greylock Regional High School.
Three Mountaineers made improvement from their times chalked up at last week's Johnson State Invitational while a few others topped their marks from last year's Classic.
SVC placed 18th as a team, putting up 573 points as SUNY Geneseo took first with 48. Southern Vermont is back in action next Saturday, October 1 with an 11:15 a.m. start at the Keene State Invitational.

Southern Vermont sophomore Stephen McCall (Brockton, Mass.) led his squad in his first 8000 meter race of the year, coming through with a time of 28:12. Junior captain Marc Brandmeyer (Bennington, Vt.) was next for SVC with a 28:42 while the next two Mountaineers were side-by-side; senior Corey Barcomb (Burlington, Vt.) crossed the line at 29:44 with Bennington College sophomore Noah Froh (Milwaukee, Wis.) being right behind him with a 29:45 performance. Barcomb's time was 21 seconds faster than he posted at last year's Classic while Froh's was 41 seconds ahead of his 2015 showing.
SVC freshman Davante Smith (Ellenville, N.Y.) wasn't far behind at 30:24, shaving 12 seconds off his time from a week ago. Classmate Bailey Hamilton (Londonderry, N.H.) knocked nine seconds off his 8k mark from last week's race with a 31:00, and Bennington sophomore Alexander Ging (Simsbury, Conn.) took 58 seconds off his previous personal record with a 31:35. Senior Aden Fischer (Arlington, Vt.) rounded out the team with a 33:37, a time 23 seconds faster than that which he put up at last year's Classic.
