BENNINGTON, Vt. – For the second straight week, Southern Vermont College sophomore Justin Ferguson (Broadalbin, New York) has been named the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Men's Cross Country Rookie of the Week, this time for the period ending September 14, 2014 as announced by the league on Monday.
Ferguson placed second overall on his home course in last week's meet during the 2014 Mountaineer Invitational on the SVC campus. He crossed the finish line just 12 seconds behind the individual champion and teammate Herson Canta (Lagunitas, California). The rookie's time of 17:12 (5:32/mile) on the hard mountain-side 5K course was instrumental in the team placing first overall and winning the meet, the first time the Mountaineers' men's side has won its home event.
This award marks the third time in eight days that Ferguson is being honored in a great start to his collegiate varsity career. After being named the NECC Rookie of the Week last Monday, he was selected as an Eastern College Athletic Conference New England Co-Rookie of the Week, both for his performance at the Castleton State College Invitational back on September 7.
Ferguson and the Mountaineers look to carry their momentum into this Saturday's Middlebury College Invitational, race time slated for 1:45 p.m.
