MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Saturday afternoon at Middlebury College's Aldrich Invitational, the Southern Vermont College men's cross country team placed fourth overall with senior Herson Canta (Lagunitas, California) finishing fifth individually.
Canta continues to place highly this season, finishing the 8000 meter race with a time of 27:04. He has been in the top five in each of the three meets this year.
SVC sophomore Justin Ferguson (Broadalbin, New York) was second across the line for the Mountaineers, placing 25th overall at 27:56. He was followed by freshmen brothers Marc and Andrew Brandmeyer (Bennington, Vermont) who came in 44th and 47th place, respectively; Marc finished the course with a time of 29:28 while Andrew was not far behind at 29:52. Southern Vermont sophomore Corey Barcomb (Burlington, Vermont) rounded out the Mountaineers' top five with a 53rd placing, coming in at 30:37.
Junior Cameron Michael Curtiss (Milton, Vermont) was right on Barcomb's heels, finishing next for the Mountaineers at 30:42. Senior captain Victor Velazquez (South Pasadena, California) finished at 31:43, and junior Kenny Poteat (Yonkers, New York) crossed at 33:11. Senior Hesbon Ogeka (Windom, Minnesota) ran a time of 33:40 while sophomore Aden Fischer (Arlington, Vermont) came in at 35:59. Sophomore Patrick O'Toole (West Springfield, Massachusetts) rounded out the team at 39:30.
SVC was able to obtain a minor personal victory, beating Colby-Sawyer College (6th overall as a team) by 29 points; CSC had taken the team title from Southern Vermont by a mere four points two weeks ago at the Castleton State Invitational.
Middlebury was victorious as a team on its home course, coming in first with the help of four top 10 finishers. MC senior Kevin Wood (Lincolnshire, Illinois) was the individual champion, crossing the finish line with a time of 26:08. Colby College and Hamilton College rounded out the top three team placements with second and third overall finishes, respectively.
Southern Vermont keeps the season rolling next Saturday, September 27, when the Mountaineers visit nearby Williamstown, Massachusetts for the Williams College Purple Valley Invitational that is scheduled to start at 12:15 p.m.
