Men's Cross Country Races to 9th at Keene Invite

KEENE, N.H. – The Southern Vermont College men's cross country team participated against a tough field at the Keene Invitational on Saturday at Keene State College, an 8K race that included Division II and III institutions.

SVC was led by junior Herson Canta (Eagle Rock, Calif.) who came in with a time of 28:33 placing him 24th overall. He was followed by junior captain Victor Velazquez (Los Angeles, Calif.) who finished 48th at 29:53.

Freshman Corey Barcomb (Burlington, Vt.) crossed third for the Mountaineers at 31:14, and junior Hesbon Ogeka (Windom, Minn.) was 40 seconds behind at 31:54. Sophomore Cameron Curtiss (Milton, Vt.) rounded out the Southern Vermont top five with a time of 33:15 despite battling a bad nose bleed prior to the race.

Sophomore Kenneth Poteat (Yonkers, N.Y.) was on Curtiss' heals with a time of 33:37, and freshman Patrick O'Toole (West Springfield, Mass.) crossed at 41:30.

Coach Newton's crew finished ninth as a team out of the 11 groups competing. The hosting Owls took the day with the help of senior Ryan Widzgowski (Camden, Maine) who bested all runners with a time of 26:36. Brandeis University and the University of Southern Maine finished second and third, respectively, in the team scoring.

Southern Vermont is now able to rest up as it looks to the Western New England University Golden Bear Invitational Saturday, October 19, a race at which the team is looking to record some impressive results.
