ENDICOTT, MA- For the third time in as many weeks the Southern Vermont College Mountaineers and the Elms College Blazers will meet up in Men's Volleyball action. However, Friday evening's match will have more at stake when the two sides meet in the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) semi-finals at Endicott College at 7:00PM.
In the season series, each team won on its home court. At Elms, SVC took a game lead at 2-1 before the Blazers rallied off two straight to take the match 3-2. In the Mountaineer Athletic Center, Elms held a two set advantage, but Southern Vermont took the next three sets to win 3-2.
In the win at home, the Mountaineer freshmen duo of Gabriel Franco and Joseph Dighton had 14 and 13 kills respectively. Dighton a two time NECC Rookie of the week also had two service aces and five blocks in the victory. Senior, Nick Haggerty had 19 digs in his final home game for Southern Vermont while fellow senior Connor Murray slammed seven kills.
The Mountaineers are led by Dighton, who hit .314 this season. Sophomore, Anthony Barahona leads SVC with 250 kills, while Haggerty averages 3.19 digs per set, and Herson Canta has 555 assists in 2012.
SVC set a program mark with twelve wins this year, more than the previous five years combined. The Mountaineers enter the NECC tournament as the three seed, also a program best. Southern Vermont is 1-9 All-Time against the Blazers; but for Friday evenings match, all the records will be thrown out for the right to play in the conference championship game.
