A Splitting Weekend for Men's Volleyball

PROVIDENCE, RI- The Southern Vermont College Men's Volleyball team went 2-2 this weekend at the Johnson and Wales Tournament, to finish 3rd place. The Mountaineers opened the tournament with a non conference loss to Daniel Webster, then won against SUNY IT and CCNY, before ending the weekend with a loss to Johnson and Wales.

Friday afternoon, SVC opened with NECC foe Daniel Webster. The Eagles took the first set 25-16, but SVC came right back with a 25-23 victory in the second. From there DWC won the next two sets by scores of 25-18 and 25-19. Anthony Barahona led SVC with 14 kills and Joseph Dighton contributed 11 kills. Barahona also had a double-double with 16 digs. Anthony Ayala had a double-double as well with 14 assists and 10 digs.

In the second match against SUNY IT, SVC senior captain Connor Murray led the team to a 3-0 victory. Murray had eight kills and seven blocks in the win. Dighton also had six kills, and senior libero Nick Haggerty had 10 digs.

Saturday morning the Mountaineers moved to 2-1 in the tournament with a 3-0 win against CCNY. Again Murray led the team with eight kills along with eight kills from Corey Mills. Haggerty also had 10 digs in the win for SVC, as Herson Canta led the team with 20 assists.

With a chance for second place in the tournament, Southern Vermont took on Johnson and Wales in the tournament finale. After splitting the first two sets, JWU won the third and fourth set for a 3-1 win. Murray had 11 kills in the loss as Barahona contributed 10 kills.

Dighton was named to the All-Tournament team with 24 kills on the weekend. Southern Vermont is now 8-9 in 2012 and will return to action this week with five matches. Thursday SVC will take on Daniel Webster in a conference match before the Endicott tournament next weekend.
