Volleyball Sets Program Win Mark with 3-0 Sweep over Regis

WESTON, Mass.- The Southern Vermont College Men's Volleyball team made history Thursday evening with a 3-0 (25-10, 25-5, 25-8) victory over Regis College in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action. The Mountaineers won its sixth game of 2012 Thursday night, at the Teresa Higgins Gymnasium, which is the most in Men's Volleyball program history. The Pride moves to 1-10 overall on the season and 0-6 in NECC play.

The first set started with an offensive attack from the Mountaineers going up 2-0. Regis battled back to tie the set at 2-2 on a block from Markenson Telfort. On the next play Corey Mills recorded his first kill of the night to put the Mountaineers up by one. Mills then went back to the service line and Southern Vermont took complete momentum to go on a 6-0 run. SVC continued to click on offense taking control of the set and tallied the final five points en route to a 25-10 victory.

The second set opened with a tally from Southern Vermont's Herson Canta on a service ace to put the Mountaineers up 1-0. Canta had two consecutive successful serves before the Pride's Si Pan Leong converted on a set from David Amicangioli to make the score 4-1 in favor of SVC. Mills rallied off three straight service aces midway through the second set to move the score to 15-2 in favor of the Mountaineers. Tino Escovedo rallied to finish the set with successful serve that was killed by Mills to put the final tally at 25-5 and give SVC its second victory.

Canta opened the third set for the Mountaineers serving two successful times to put the score at 2-0. Regis answered back by forcing a ball handling error off a hard attack from senior Andrew Carroll to make the score 2-1. However, the Mountaineers continued to roll with a solid effort from its back court that helped seal the victory with a 25-8 finish in the third set.

Regis received offensive performances from Carroll who led the team with three kills and Amicangioli who chipped in with six assists.

The Mountaineers were led on offense by Anthony Barahona (Eagle Rock, Calif.) who notched a team high with seven kills. Canta was the main set up man for SVC dishing out 30 assists on the contest, while fellow teammate Connor Murray (Litchfield, Conn.) racked up a team high in blocks with four.

The Mountaineers resume play Wednesday March 14th, when the travel to take on Sage College at 7:00 p.m. The Pride returns to action Tuesday March 13th, when the team travels to Boston, Massachusetts to take on Emerson College at 7:00 p.m.
