Men's Volleyball Cruises to NECC victory

BENNINGTON, Vt.- After a tough weekend where the Southern Vermont College Men's Volleyball team played against three of the top ten teams in the country, they returned home Tuesday evening for a New England Collegiate Conference match-up against Regis College. The Mountaineers used a strong offense to power past the Pride 3-0 at the Mountaineer Athletic Center.

Southern Vermont hit .452 for the match, connecting on 35 kills in 62 attempts. The Mountaineers also executed its offense by only committing seven errors in the match. On the other side Regis managed nine kills in 74 attempts, and committed 18 errors.

Connor Murray, Joseph Dighton and Corey Mills led the Mountaineers. Murray hit for an .833 hitting percentage while Dighton and Mills connected for eight kills apiece. Southern Vermont career assist leader Anthony Ayala had 14 assists and Herson Canta had 13. Senior libero Nick Haggerty led the defense with 15 digs.

"I'm very happy with the way we opened in front of a good crowd at home tonight," Head Coach Josh Stokes said. "It is nice to start the conference season off with a win."

Andrew Carroll and Drew Wilder each had three kills for the Pride. David Amicangioli had five assists while Carroll also had five digs.

The Mountaineers improve to 1-4, and will try to improve to 2-0 in NECC play this Saturday when they host Daniel Webster College at 2:00PM. Before the match Southern Vermont will unveil three banners from the fall seasons, including the Women's Volleyball NECC championship banner.

Regis is 0-1 in 2012 and will be back in action when they host Emerson at noon on Saturday.
