Men's Volleyball Drops Two to Open Season

ROCHESTER, NY- A young Southern Vermont College Men's Volleyball team was thrown right into the fire when the Mountaineers took on #3 Carthage and #8 Philadelphia Bible to open its season. SVC fell 3-0 in both games Friday evening at the Nazareth tournament.  

In the first match of the day the Mountaineers took on Carthage. Southern Vermont couldn't muster any offense as the Mountaineer squad hit .055 for the match. In the first game SVC hit .190 but was held to a .000 percentage the rest of the way.

Anthony Barahona led the way for SVC with five kills. Freshman Joseph Dighton had four kills for the Mountaineers. Herson Canta assisted on 12 of the Mountaineers 22 kills for the match, while Nick Haggerty led the team with seven digs.

Carthage hit .411 for the match and had 31 digs to the Mountaineers 14. Randy Hansen hit an outstanding .700 as the outside hitter connected for 16 kills on 20 attacks. Connor Wexter had 36 assists and six digs to lead Carthage in both categories.

In the second match of the night it looked as if the Mountaineers were going to take their first game of the season in the first set. SVC led 23-21 but Philadelphia Bible ran off the next four points to take the first set.  Philly Bible would then go on to win the next two sets as well.

Barahona led the charge in the second match as well with seven kills. Gabriel Franco connected on four kills for the Mountaineers as Canta added 13 assists.

Southern Vermont will be back in action Saturday when they face off against 2011 Molton Champion and #1 Nazareth. The Mountaineers will then play another again Saturday determined on seeding. SVC will host its first home game Thursday when they take on NECC foe Regis at 7PM.
