BENNINGTON, Vt. – Southern Vermont continues its losing skid extending the streak to five games. In the first game SVC last to Wentworth in straight sets, 25-19, 25-18 and 29-27. In the middle match of the day Newbury defeated Wentworth 3-1 (23-25, 25-23, 25-21 and 25-15). The last match of the day showcased Newbury defeating SVC 3-0 (25-19, 25-17 and 25-16).
The Mountaineers fall to 2-8 overall. Wentworth improves to 11-6 and Newbury improves to 9-5 overall.
In the early game Wentworth edged Southern Vermont in the hitting game with a percentage of .138. SVC hit .115% from the floor. The third set of the game featured a back and forth rally starting at the 24th point for each team. The Leopards came away with the tight win to end the game.
Leading the way for the Leopards was Ross Burdett with 13 kills. Tyler Moriarty added 31 assists in the effort. SVC's Anthony Barahona also had 13 kills while Anthony Ayala added 21 assists. Aaron Eschler led both sides with 15 digs.
The middle game of the day featured Newbury defeating Wentworth 3-1. Newbury hit an astounding .320% from the floor. The Nighthawks proved to be too much for the Leopards to handle.
The Nighthawks were led by Max Daley, James Beck and Danny Tiner with 15, 12 and 10 kills each. Matt Talamantes had 41 assists in the victory.
Wentworth's Lowell Jesmer had 14 kills in the loss. Moriarty added 24 assists for the Leopards.
NECC's, Newbury and Southern Vermont concluded the tri-match. The Nighthawks continued its hot hitting with .293% from the floor. SVC couldn't keep up only swinging .083%.
The Nighthawks attack was spread throughout the lineup with Daley leading all with nine kills. Talamantes added 26 assists in the game.
Leading the way for the Mountaineers was Barahona with eight kills. Ayala added 16 assists in the defeat.
The Mountaineers return to action on Wednesday, February 16th at Daniel Webster College. The start of the game begins at 6:00 p.m.
