Leopards Sweep Eagles & Mountaineers In MVB Tri-Match

BENNINGTON, Vt. - The Southern Vermont College men's volleyball team hosted a North East Collegiate Volleyball Association New England division tri-match as the visiting Wentworth Institute of Technology Leopards swept the series defeating the Eagles of Daniel Webster College 3-0 and SVC 3-0 Saturday afternoon in the Field House. The Mountaineers fought hard against the Eagles but came up short as DWC went 1-1 on the day.

With the wins, Wentworth improves to 8-6 overall, 8-1 NECVA, while Southern Vermont slips to 1-9 overall, 1-8 NECVA, 0-5 NECC. Daniel Webster ended the day 4-5 overall, 4-4 NECVA, 3-2 NECC.

SVC fought hard against the Eagles leading for a good portion of the second set but was not victorious as it committed 47 errors in the three sets.

Daniel Webster was led by Eric Smith who had seven kills, 15 assists, and eight digs. Setter Kyle Clement added 15 assists as well and Chris Shannon led the attack with nine kills (.318). The Eagles struggled from the service line committing 20 errors to the Mountaineers' 13, committing several of its own.

Southern Vermont was led by Sean Moore who had nine kills, five digs, and a block assist. Setter Neel Patel had 16 assists, five digs, and assisted with several blocks. Matt Schwab, Jullian Amaral, and Ryan Heron played strong defense with 10 digs, 10 digs, and 12 digs in that order.  Chris Williams added four kills and Ruari Clancy rounded out the box with two aces and seven digs.

Chuck Gregory led the Leopards attack in the final match of the day as he notched seven kills (.700). Moriarty had 30 assists, giving him 60 on the day, and five aces to give Wentworth a strong cushion.

Moore and Amaral led the Mountaineers with four kills apiece. Patel assisted them along the way tallying 13 assists. Attacking errors ultimately brought down SVC as it hit -.151 against the Leopards.

Southern Vermont is back in action Sunday, February 21st, when it travels to the Sage Colleges for a non-conference tri-match versus Sage and Yeshiva University. The matches are slated for 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 3:00 p.m.
