Men's Soccer Topped 3-2 in Overtime by Pine Manor

BENNINGTON, Vt. – The Southern Vermont College men's soccer team lost 3-2 in overtime Friday afternoon to visiting Pine Manor College at Everett Field in non-conference play.

The win is the first for the Gator's program in their inaugural season. Another first seen in the game was a point recorded by a Bennington College student when sophomore Martin Carrillo (Quito, Ecuador) notched an assist on a Southern Vermont goal in the second half.

PMC freshman Jahvar Gayle (Bloomfield, Connecticut) scored two goals on the day, including the game winner 5:14 into overtime, his first two of the season. Mountaineer senior Erik Argueta (Pico Rivera, California) also scored twice in the match, his first two goals of the year.

Gator freshman keeper Oscar Estrada (North Port, Florida) picked up the win (1-1), playing the first half and then the overtime period; he made one save on the day. Classmate Dominic Douglas (Bainbridge, Georgia) turned away six Mountaineer shots in his 45 minutes of action during the second half. SVC freshman goalie Cody Gross (Fair Lawn, New Jersey) tallied two saves in the loss (0-5).

Play started with Pine Manor seeing inside chances, taking its looks at net to no avail. The Gator defense held strong at the top of its box, preventing the Mountaineers from getting through to see quality openings. PMC missed a golden opportunity with 25 minutes to play in the first half when freshman Nathaniel Hayes (Newport Richey, Florida) played a ball from the left side across the box to an open on-running freshman Mahamadou Coulibaly (Bamako, Mali); he couldn't get his foot on it, however, as the game remained scoreless.

The 0-0 tie didn't last long after that as play started to open up for both sides. Gayle collected a ball 35 yards out, went one-on-one with an SVC defender headed towards the goal, and buried it past Gross for the lead 25:31 into the game. The Mountaineers found an equalizer at the 33:11 mark when senior captain Tommy Youngblood (Leonardtown, Maryland) connected a pass to Argueta who maneuvered around the last PMC defender on the right side, went at the goal and blasted it into the back of the net to make it a 1-1 affair.

The tie stood through halftime and into the 64th minute when the Gators took their second lead of the day. Awarded a corner kick, they played short to Gayle who then went towards the center and made a crossing pass to freshman Diego Maillo (Miami, Florida); Maillo put it home to put his team up 2-1 with his first goal of the season.

Once again, however, SVC was able to even things with Argueta's second of the day. Carrillo collected the ball in the middle of the field about 40 yards out and played a great curling pass over the Gator defense, allowing Argueta to run on to it from the right side. The senior took a touch and finished to make it 2-2 in the 71st minute.

With overtime looming, Pine Manor nearly slipped ahead with a Gayle shot off the crossbar at the 85:57 mark, the third time of the day that he hit one of the keeper's best friends. In the final minute of regulation, Southern Vermont made its own push for the game winner, but Argueta's shot was blocked by Gator freshman defenseman Alejandro Moreno (Temecula, California) and the game went to the extra period.

Neither side really amounted much in the first five minutes of overtime before Maillo brought the ball in deep and played it across the six-yard box to Gayle who knocked it home to make history.

Southern Vermont (0-5) now gears up for a tough 4 p.m. home contest with Middlebury College on Wednesday while Pine Manor (1-2) jumps right back into action on Saturday with a 2 p.m. kickoff at Daniel Webster College.
