LEICESTER, Mass. – The Southern Vermont men's soccer team suffered another one-goal loss on Wednesday at Becker College by a final score of 2-1. Becker notched the game-winner in the last minute of play.
With the loss, the Mountaineers fall to 2-11 overall on the season, 1-3 in the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC). The Hawks improve to 3-11, 1-3 in the conference.
Southern Vermont got on the board first when Erik Argueta (Pico Rivera, Calif.) drove a shot into the bottom right corner of the net, just past the outstretched arms of Becker keeper Tim MacDonald (Holden, Mass.). Mountaineer freshman Ruben Olivares (Pico Rivera, Calif.) assisted on the goal, his first of the season.
The Hawks tied the game in the 37th minute when Jon Badot (Halifax, Mass.) headed a corner kick from Ryan Barry (North Attleboro, Mass.) into the back of the net.
The score remained tie at 1-1 until 00:35 remaining in regulation. Brian Ferraro (Stephens City, Va.) took a pass from Jose Galvez-Lovo (Nashua, N.H.) and blasted a shot over the head of Mountaineer goalie Christopher Dunham (Valley Falls, N.Y.), giving the Hawks a dramatic 2-1 victory.
Dunham finished the game with seven saves, while MacDonald recorded six on the afternoon.
The Mountaineers are off until Tuesday the 16th when they host Elms College for a 4 p.m. kickoff. The Hawks will prepare for their 12 p.m. match on Saturday at Regis (Mass.).
