Men's Soccer Falls at Wheaton Collegel 5-1

NORTON, Mass.- The Southern Vermont College men's soccer team lost at Wheaton College on Sunday afternoon, 5-1. Wheaton utilized a balanced scoring attack as five different student-athletes scored.  Mountaineer freshman Ruben Olivares (Pico Rivera, Calif.) scored his second goal of the week.

Wheaton sophomore Luke Finkelstein (Peabody, Mass.) powered the hosts' scoring attack with three points on a goal and an assist.  Wheaton (4-2) wasted little time in jumping out to an early advantage.  The Lyons cracked the scoring column in the sixth minute as Finkelstein curved his first marker of the campaign inside the left post from 30 yards out. Freshman Kevin Gil (Pawtucket, R.I.) netted what proved to be the decisive marker just six minutes later when he gathered a blocked shot inside the goal mouth and deposited it into the vacant net.

Senior Will Nesbitt (Holliston, Mass.) added his first goal of the season in the 39th minute, converting on a through pass from classmate Federico Kelly (Hingham, Mass.) that sent the striker alone behind the defensive unit. The Lyons entered the intermission holding a 3-0 advantage.

Wheaton continued to apply the offensive pressure in the early minutes of the second stanza. Senior David Turina (North Yarmouth, Mass.) capitalized on a free kick from the left corner of the 18-yard box in the 48th minute. It was his first marker of the season.

The Mountaineers (0-6) were finally able to solve the Lyons' defensive attack in the 50th minute when Olivares took a feed from junior Pierre Massena (West Milford, N.J.) and ripped a shot between the outstretched arms of freshman keeper Matt Dickey (Newton, Mass) and the left post.

Sophomore Marlon Ramalho (Framingham, Mass.) registered an insurance marker in the 68th minute. Ramalho headed a corner kick from Finkelstein to record his third goal of the season.

SVC sophomore Brenden Shea (North Providence, R.I.) stopped four Lyon attempts, while Dickey made three saves to earn his first intercollegiate victory.

The Mountaineers return to their home pitch for a 4 p.m. start against Green Mountain College on Wednesday; Wheaton returns to its conference schedule at 1 p.m. on September 22 when the Lyons host Springfield College.
