Men's Soccer Wins NECC Regular Season Championship

BENNINGTON, Vt.- For the first time since joining the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Southern Vermont College Men's Soccer is the regular season champions. With a 6-0-1 NECC record the Mountaineers earned the top spot, and home field advantage throughout the playoffs.

"Winning the regular season title is a big step for us as a program.  Over the last few seasons, we have proven we could compete once we got into the post-season. Although, in those years, we were always battling going into the last week of the season for seeding," said Head Coach Tim Penrod. "The first round bye is huge for us, last year we had to play three games in five days, all of which were on the road.  The travel takes a huge toll on your body.  This year, we'll get to rest our guys, stay healthy, and stay at home."

The Mountaineers were led by a potent offense throughout the 2011 season. An offense that ranks in the top 30 of Division III, averaged 2.4 goals per game and 3.1 goals in conference play. 2010 NECC MVP Nick Haggerty led Southern Vermont in scoring for the fourth straight year. The senior scored 15 goals in 2011, while sophomore transfer Pierre Massena tallied nine goals.

Southern Vermont's California duo, had a major impact in the Mountaineer success. Freshman Erik Argutea scored six goals and had four assists for the NECC champions. Classmate Ignacio Cervantes had three goals and four assists for SVC.

However, it was the senior play of Noah Massucci, against Lesley University that clinched the Mountaineers championship run. After falling behind 1-0 in the first half, Massucci scored two second half goals en route to a 2-1 NECC victory.

"Our seniors have really led us to this point.  It's not just about the statistics from each game, it is the sacrifices and dedication that this group of guys has shown. They've pushed the new players not to be content with some success, and have established an expectation for success each and every day we're together," continued Penrod.

The Mountaineer defense, led by seniors Greg Gilmore and Connor Murray, have helped freshman goalkeeper Connor Anniello earn the most wins in school history for a single season. Anniello has 11 wins as the net minder for the Mountaineers, which only sits behind SVC goalkeeper coach Aaron Eschler for the most wins in a career.

Southern Vermont will host a semi-final match next Friday at Everett Field. Kickoff for the game is scheduled for 2:00PM.
