BENNINGTON, Vt. – 31 points from the Daniel Webster College men's basketball bench helped carry the Eagles over Southern Vermont College Saturday afternoon in a 67-52 DWC victory in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) play at the Mountaineer Athletic Center.
The 15-point difference matches that from the season's earlier meeting at Daniel Webster in which the Mountaineers were defeated 87-72.
SVC senior captain Taeshon Johnson (Charlotte, N.C.) led all players with 17 points while sophomore captain Jermaine Campbell (Bridgeport, Conn.) recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 14 points and a team-high 12 rebounds.
The Eagles were led by junior forward Daris Cosby (Columbia, S.C.) who scored 11 on the afternoon while junior guard David Feinstein (Londonderry, N.H.) scored 10 for DWC off the bench.
After a Johnson layup put SVC on the board first, Daniel Webster went on a 10-0 run to force the Mountaineers to play from behind the rest of the game. Campbell and Johnson went back-and-forth in the first to help Southern Vermont climb back to within two as the score stood at 16-14 with 11:12 remaining in the first.
A pair of free throws and an ensuing layup by Feinstein were followed by a tip-in from DWC junior forward Aiden Collins (Paterson, N.J.) to stretch the lead out to 22-14. Southern Vermont responded with a couple baskets from behind the arc by freshman guard Jacob Schongar (Lansingburgh, N.Y.) and Campbell to again pull within two at the 8:44 mark.
The momentum for the Mountaineers would then cease as Daniel Webster went on a 12-3 run to end the half, going into the locker room ahead 36-25. The lone SVC basket came from sophomore captain Travis Severs (Bennington, Vt.) who knocked down his only 3-pointer of the game.
Two early downtown baskets by the Eagles in the second half gave them a 42-27 lead, a margin which Southern Vermont would trim to just seven at two points through the remainder of the game.
With just over seven minutes to play, SVC went on a 7-0 run that was capped by Schongar's second long-range basket. However, late misses caused the Mountaineers to foul, and Daniel Webster was able to convert at the line to come away with the eventual 67-52 win.
SVC owned a 50-47 advantage on the boards, but the Eagles were able to turn Mountaineer turnovers into 11 points while SVC was only able to gain three from the DWC mistakes.
Johnson grabbed nine boards as four SVC players had six on the afternoon. DWC senior center David Schindewolf (Robbinsville, N.J.) recorded a game-high 11 rebounds, and senior captain John Hickson led all players with five assists for Daniel Webster to go along with his nine points.
The Mountaineers (0-18 overall, 0-10 NECC) turn to non-conference play as they host Williams College Tuesday at 7 p.m. for the Ephs' first-ever visit to SVC. The Eagles (8-10 overall, 4-5 NECC) visit the Blazers of Elms College Tuesday for a 7 p.m. NECC contest.
