Leicester, Mass. – Becker had four players in double figures to help seal a 89-74 victory over the Mountaineers of Southern Vermont in a New England Collegiate Conference matchup Saturday afternoon at the Leicester Gymnasium.
The Hawks remain undefeated in conference play improving to 20-3 (12-0 NECC). Southern Vermont drops to 14-9 (8-4 NECC)
The Hawks held a 41-27 halftime lead. Southern Vermont held a slim 7-6 lead after a Derrick Cenicola 3-pointer just three minutes into the game, the Hawks responded with a 18-6 run over the next six minutes to take a 24-13 lead and never look back. Leaders at the half for SVC were Lance Spratling with 12 points and Ben Naaktgeboren with 8 points and 7 rebounds. Leggett had 10 points on 5 of 9 shooting and Markus Wright had 6 points and 8 rebounds for the Hawks. Becker had 7 steals in the half.
Becker kept the pressure on for most of the second half building leads at time to 19 points. With just under 5 minutes to play the Mountaineers had cut the lead to 11 at 73-62 but couldn't get any closer. Becker held the game advantage in shooting 44% to 35% and in rebounds 48-47. Southern Vermont's Naaktgeboren finished with a game high 19 rebounds and 14 points while his teammate Lance Spratling had a game high 29 points.
The Mountaineers return to action on Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at Elms College. The NECC game starts at 8:00 p.m.
