Mountaineers Fight Hard Against 10th Ranked Panthers

BENNINGTON, Vt. - The Southern Vermont College men's basketball team played host to the Middlebury College Panthers, ranked 10th in Division III in the nation, staying within 11 points into the second half before being outmanned and suffering a 94-68 loss Tuesday night. Senior forward Joe Karnik led the Mountaineers with 15 points and the Panthers were led by freshman guard Jake Wolfin who tallied 18 points and five assists.

Southern Vermont came out aggressive and played a strong first half only down by 14 (44-30). The Mountaineers 19 turnovers ultimately put the brakes on a chance of victory as the Panthers capitalized for 25 off turnovers (20 in the second half alone). Middlebury also had 34 points from the bench to Southern Vermont's 12.

Freshman guard had a fairly solid performance with a double-double scoring 12 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Junior forward Lance Spratling posted 13 points and sophomore forward Cam Herrington rounded out the scoring with 10 points and eight rebounds.

Senior guard Tim Edwards had a double-double for the Panthers with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

The loss drops the Mountaineers to 4-10 overall, while Middlebury improved to 17-1.

The Mountaineers are back in action Thursday, January 28th, when it travels to Newbury College for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
