RENSSELAER, N.Y. - The Southern Vermont College men's basketball team scored 18 of the first 23 points of the game and the Mountaineers never looked back as they defeated Albany College of Pharmacy, 97-56, in the consolation game at the RPI Shoot-Out. Junior guard Lance Spratling led all scorers with 22 points on 11-18 shooting and Joe Karnik had another monster double-double with 21 pts and 18 boards.
Pharmacy, which falls to 2-5, led by three points (5-2) early on but Southern Vermont scored the next 16 points for the big lead. The Mountaineers went on to lead by as many as 33 points before the break, led by senior forward Karnik, who had 19 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocked shots in the first half. SVC shot 56.0% from the floor in the first half on their way to improving to 3-5 on the season.
Ben Naaktgeboren, back from a recent injury, had a solid performance with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman guard Derrick Cenicola chipped in with 15 points, including 3-4 from three land. He and Spratling both had 12 points in the first half.
Albany College of Pharmacy saw two players reach double digits in points, led by senior forward Zach Bratek, who had 19 points with six rebounds. Ben Sheppard recorded 12 points and sophomore Peter Aiken had a team-best 13 rebounds.
The Mountaineers are back in action when it host's NECC foe Mitchell College Saturday, December 12th, at 3:00 p.m.
