BENNINGTON, Vt.- The Southern Vermont College baseball team lost its sixth straight contest Wednesday afternoon when they took on Skidmore College in non-conference NCAA baseball action. The Mountaineers fell at the hands of the Thoroughbreds 13-5 at Bill Epstein Field.
The Mountaineers led the game 2-1 after five innings of play when Mike Larsen scored the go ahead run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth. In the top of the sixth, Skidmore responded with seven unearned runs that gave them an 8-2 advantage.
To start the sixth, Zak Rudman reached on an error and Leejay Pollacchi reach on a catcher interference call. A Matty Tatkow singled tied the score at two and the Thoroughbreds took a 4-2 advantage after another SVC miscue.
After a 20 minute rain delay, stalled the sixth inning, Skidmore added four more runs to take an 8-2 lead after five and a half innings of play. In the bottom of the sixth the Mountaineers responded with two runs when Dillon Desiderato and Max Ginter each singled.
The Thoroughbreds scored two more runs in the eighth and ninth inning each, after SVC scored one in the bottom of the seventh to end the game at 13-5 in favor of Skidmore.
Each team used multiple pitchers for the game. Matt Barra received the win for Skidmore as he worked the fifth inning. Dave Northup was on the wrong end of the decision, as the junior got the loss, without surrendering an earned run.
Dustyn Marfyak got his first collegiate start for the Mountaineers. The freshman worked two innings and only allowed one run, while he struck out three. Kurt Kowalczyk worked three innings of relief without surrendering a baserunner. Corey Armstrong, Joel DeFedele, and Ginter also pitched for SVC.
Tatkow and Erik Watkins led Skidmore at the plate. Tatkow went 4-5 as Watkins was 3-6 with four RBI's. Mo Kreitenberg also recorded a multi-hit game with a 2-5 performance and two runs scored. Jesse Frehling had two RBI's in the game, for the victors.
In the loss, SVC scattered six hits. Along with Desiderato and Ginter, Pat Warrington, AJ Watt, Corey Armstrong, and Ian Valentine all had a hit. Armstrong scored two runs for the Mountaineers.
Southern Vermont falls to 4-19 with the defeat as Skidmore improves to 13-4. The Mountaineers will return to action Friday afternoon when they travel to NECC foe Becker College.
