Mountaineers Fall in Conference Opener

Nashua – The Southern Vermont College Mountaineers fell in both games of a New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) double header against the Daniel Webster Eagles, Saturday afternoon in Nashua, NH. The Eagles came from behind in game one to win 7-5 and won game two 7-0.

Max Ginter (Hamden, Conn.) took the loss (2-2) for SVC, which moved to 3-13 overall (0-2 NECC). Cody Labadia (Howes Caves, N.Y.) doubled for the Mountaineers.

Sophomore righty Aaron Agrelo (New Bedford, Mass.) tossed a six-hit complete game seven inning shutout, striking out five and walking one for the Eagles. Agrelo (2-0) was solid throughout, allowing just extra-base hit while rookie Kyle Brigham (Hudson, N.H.) went 2 for 4 with a RBI double and two-run triple as the Eagles improved to 4-8 overall (2-3 NECC),

The Eagles plated a single run in the third on a Brigham RBI double that scored Chasse and broke it open to give Agrelo breathing room with six in the bottom of the fourth, keyed by Brigham's triple that scored both Chasse and Kilgore, who had each pushed a run across with run-scoring singles in the frame. Both would finish with two hits.

In the opener, Korey LeLievre (Hudson, N.H.) had two hits and two RBI and Nate Marshall (Groveton, N.H.0 added two more RBI as the Eagles rallied from a 5-0 deficit early on, plating single runs in the second, third, fourth and fifth, and rallied for the win with a three-run sixth.

SVC had jumped on Eagle starter Kory Kiro (Goffstown, N.H.) with one in the top of the first on back-to-back doubles from Corey Briggs (Wood River, R.I.) and Keith Diotte (Cambridge, N.Y.). Then back-to-back two-run doubles from Diotte and Pat Warrington (Flocroft, Penn.) pushed the lead to 5-0 in the second.

Nate Marshall (Groveton, N.H.) pushed Tyler Bonin (Litchfield, N.H.) across in the second for a 5-1 game, Erick Bordeau (Alton Bay, N.H.) added a RBI single in the second and Marshall added a sac fly RBI in the third for a 5-3 game. A LeLievre sac fly plated Kilgore in the fifth for a 5-4 game and Kilgore would tie it with a single to score Marshall in the sixth.

Brigham and LeLievre would follow with back-to-back doubles for the sixth and seventh runs. Rich Lizotte (West Warwick, R.I.) came on for a one-hot seventh to pick up his first save of the season and program-record 10th of his career in the top of the seventh, giving Kiro (1-1) the victory.

Kiro would finish allowing five earned runs on 10 hits, striking out three and walking two. Briggs took the loss (0-2) in relief of SVC starter Joel DeFedele (N. Kingstown, R.I.).

The teams conclude their three-game NECC set with a nine-inning matchup on Sunday in Bennington, Vt. beginning at 1:00 p.m.
