BENNINGTON, Vt. – The Southern Vermont College baseball team trounced the Vermont Technical College 12-2 Thursday, March 25 at Epstein Field. The Mountaineers were led by sophomore centerfielder Pat Warrington and freshman outfielder Joel Defedele who both went 2-for-4, each knocking in three RBI’s apiece. Freshman pitcher Corey Armstrong of Bennington, Vt. got the win on the hill improving to 3-0 with a 4.61 ERA.
The win improves Southern Vermont to 4-4 overall, while Tech falls to 0-1.
Southern Vermont fell behind 2-0 in the second inning and could not muster more than a hit off of the Green Knights starting pitcher Jeff Savage (3.0 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 3 SO). In the fourth SVC tied it up at two when Defedele crushed a double to left center off of Tech’s relief pitcher Duncan Tilford that sent Warrington and junior first baseman Adam Northup home.
The Mountaineers were not done as its bats had a field day with the Tech relievers scoring four in the fifth, two in the sixth, and four in the seventh as the umpires called the game on the 10 run mercy rule.
Warrington finished with a triple and a double for SVC. Senior Brett Pawlak (2 RBI’s) and sophomore Eric Wells each had two hits for the Mountaineers. Rounding out he offense for Southern Vermont was Northup (2 RBI’s), junior Dan Cook (1 RBI); and sophomores Danny Vardaro (1 RBI)and Keith Diotte who each had a hit. Armstrong finished with five strikeouts and only gave up two runs in six innings pitched. Sophomore Will Warner pitched a solid inning of relief striking out two to round out the box.
Junior Jordan Hodge led Tech offensively going 2-for-3 scoring one run. Junior Ben Forant knocked in both runs for the Green Knights on a single to right center and freshman Kyle Fifield got the loss on the mound for Tech giving up six runs in three innings, while striking out five.
The Mountaineers are back in action on Saturday, March 27th, at 12:00 p.m. when it travels to Worchester State University for a non-conference doubleheader.
