FORT MYERS, Fla. The Southern Vermont College baseball team fell to the St. Lawrence University Saints of Canton, N.Y. 9-4 Monday, March 8, at Terry Park. Sophomore Eric Wells had another stellar day at the plate going 4-for-5 for the second straight game, and sophomore transfer Danny Vardaro had a single that drove in two runs for the Mountaineers.

The loss drops Southern Vermont to 1-2 overall, while the Saints improved to 3-1.

It was 5-0 in St. Lawrence’s favor after one and a half innings of play. The Mountaineers charged back on a single by Vardaro with the bases loaded that sent home junior Adam Northup, who walked, and sophomore Pat Warrington, who had singled. A scoreless third inning was followed by a fourth where each team scored two runs to make it 7-4 with the Saints still on top.

St. Lawrence held off SVC in the closing innings tacking on two more runs ultimately winning 9-4 in nine innings. Sophomore pitcher Ben Naaktgeboren (0-1) took the loss for Southern Vermont, as he struck out three. Sophomore Will Warner and freshman Joel Defedele each pitched strong in relief for the Mountaineers. Sophomore pitcher Pat Considine (2-0) got the win on the mound for the Saints.

SVC sophomore Keith Diotte and freshman Corey Armstrong each had singles to round out the offensive box, while on defense the Mountaineers committed five errors.

Senior Ryan Duff led the Saints batting 3-for-4 on the day, knocking in two runs and scoring once.

The Mountaineers face off against Olivet College on Wednesday, March 10th, at 2:00 p.m.
