BENNINGTON, Vt. The Southern Vermont College baseball team fell in New England Collegiate Conference play to the Elms College Blazers 12-7 and the second game was postponed due to inclement weather with the Blazers up 1-0 in the top of the third. The Mountaineers only offense came from sophomore centerfielder Pat Warrington who went 3-for-4 with a solo blast to right center in the sixth inning.

Southern Vermont falls to 9-12 overall (3-4 NECC), while the Blazers improved to 6-15 overall (2-5 NECC).

The Elms jumped out early with four runs in the second inning on a two run single by junior Carm Bonavita, an RBI double by Brendan Cordeiro, and a walk with the bases loaded. The Mountaineers chipped away at the Blazer lead in the bottom of the second when sophomore Keith Diotte walked with the bases loaded and junior Dave Gage hit a sac fly to left field that scored sophomore Dan Cook.

Elms tacked on another run in the third inning with a sac fly by senior Robert Reyome to make it 5-2. The Mountaineer bats kept working and in the bottom of the third inning scored four runs to take the lead 6-5.

The Blazers regained the lead in the fourth when senior Mike Andrews crushed a three run homer off SVC sophomore reliever Will Warner to make it 8-6 in Elms favor.

Sophomore pitcher Corey Briggs came in and junior Albert Betances went deep twice on the young reliever, a solo shot in the fifth and a two run shot in the sixth.

The Blazers tacked on one more in the seventh and the final 12-7 gave Elms its second NECC win this year.

Elms ace Matt Woods (3-3) won on the hill striking out nine and walking six with a complete game.

Sophomore Ben Naaktgeboren pitched one and two-thirds striking out one and giving up four runs. Warner (0-1) took the loss pitching two and a third giving up three runs. Briggs pitched two innings and struck out three. Freshman Corey Armstrong pitched the seventh and struck out.

Andrews led the Blazers 2-for-5 with five RBI and Betances had two HR’s finishing with three RBI.

The Mountaineers are back in action Tuesday when its travels to SUNY Cobleskill for a non-conference game at 3:00 p.m.
