The Mountaineers Hold Off Pioneers In Four Hour Battle

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Southern Vermont College baseball team got its first taste of victory in the 2010 season with a 16-15 win over the Carroll University Pioneers of Waukesha, Wisconsin Sunday, March 7, at Terry Park. Sophomore Eric Wells went 4-for-5 knocking in four runs and scoring twice for the Mountaineers.

Freshman pitcher Corey Armstrong of Bennington, Vt. got the win and junior Dave Gage got the save for Southern Vermont. Freshman Pioneer Nick Cuzzone got the loss on the mound as Carroll fell to 1-2, and SVC improved to 1-1 overall.

SVC had strong hitting from senior Brett Pawlak who went 2-for-5 with three RBI's and scored four times. Pawlak had a triple and a double, as did sophomore outfielder Keith Diotte who went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in. Junior Dan Cook had two hits as the DH for the day, while Gage, junior Adam Northup, sophomore Pat Warrington, and freshman Joel Defedele each had a hit for Southern Vermont.

Sophomore Drew Volkmann led the way offensively for the Pioneers going 5-for-6, three of which were doubles, and knocking in three runs.

The Mountaineers have two games on Monday, March 8th, first at 12:00 p.m. versus St. Lawrence University and then at 4:00 p.m. against North Park University.
