PLYMOUTH, N.H. - The Southern Vermont College baseball squad was swept by Plymouth State University in a non-conference doubleheader 9-5 and 6-5 (8 innings) on Sunday afternoon. The Mountaineers came back late in the second game only to give up two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning for the loss.
In the nightcap, SVC got on the board in the fourth inning when freshman Eric Wells (Athens, Pa.) doubled and later scored on an infield out. The Mountaineers knotted the game at 4-4 with three runs in the seventh inning, highlighted by an RBI single by sophomore Dan Cook (Watervliet, N.Y.) and a clutch two-out, two-run triple by sophomore Adam Northup (Richmond, R.I.).
Southern Vermont took its first lead of the game in the top of the eighth on a suicide squeeze bunt by freshman Pete Metzler (Lawrence, Kan.). The Panthers pulled out the win in the bottom of the inning on RBI singles by Lausberg and McGinnis.
Sophomore Dave Gage (Gloversville, N.Y.) led SVC with two hits, one run scored, and one walk. Freshman Pat Warrington (Folcroft, Pa.), Cook, Northup, and Wells each had a hit for the Mountaineers.
Senior Marc McGinnis (4-for-4) delivered a walk-off single to right field in the bottom of the eighth inning. Four other Panthers contributed two hits apiece: Nick Englert and Jim VanGyzen, Steve Picco, and Bryant Lausberg.
Senior Chris Welch recorded the win (1-1) for PSU with an inning of shutout relief. Freshman Bobby Chatfield worked the first seven innings; he allowed only one run on three hits through six innings before surrendering three runs to tie the game in the seventh. Freshman Will Warner (Waterford, Conn.) picked up the loss dropping to 2-3 in 11 appearances. Warner pitched well for seven and a third innings striking out three and only allowing four earned runs.
In the opener Southern Vermont scored three runs in the top of the first on a Panther error, an RBI single by Cook, and an RBI fielder's choice from freshman Hank N. Blethen (Enfield, Conn.). The Panther got one back in the bottom of the first, tied the game with two more in the fourth, and took the lead for good with four runs in the fifth and two in the sixth.
Junior Brett Pawlak (Shelton, Conn.), Cook and Warrington collected two hits apiece in the opener for SVC, and Northup added a two-run double in the seventh inning.
Lausberg and Anthony Fallacaro each went 3-for-3 for PSU to lead a 15-hit attack, with Lausberg scoring three runs. VanGyzen knocked in three runs with a double and a sacrifice fly, sophomore Matt Koban and seniors Jay Kleponis and Josh Roberti added two hits apiece, and freshman Mike Cappiello hit his first career home run.
Freshman Jonathan Bishop picked up the win for PSU, evening his record at 2-2 with a complete-game effort. Wells (1-5) picked up the loss for Southern Vermont pitching five innings and striking out two.
SVC, 9-21 overall, returns home to host Saint Joseph's Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.
