FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Southern Vermont baseball squad dropped two games against Dominican University 11-3 and 13-3 on Monday. The Mountaineers fall to 1-6 overall and Dominican improved to 3-1 overall.
The Stars from Illinois presented a great pitching performance in the first game. Matthew Denn got the complete game win as he allowed SVC to score just three runs on seven hits in his seven innings of work.
Sophomore captain Adam Northup (Richmond, R.I.) led the team with a 2 for 4 performance. Strong plate appearances by the Stars gave them sufficient offense throughout the game, including a 4 for 4 showing by catcher Dominic Tardi. Dominican scored 11 runs in the last three innings, giving them the 13-3 win.
The second game saw the Mountaineers swing the bats a little better as SVC took an early lead with a two run top of the first and still had it after only allowing one run in the bottom of the inning. That's as long as they would keep the lead, however, as Dominican tacked up two more in the next inning. The Stars scored in each of the first five innings, including a six run third.
The Mountaineers were able to put up one more in the fifth, but that was not enough as they succumbed 11-3 to the Stars.
Sophomore captain Dave Gage (Gloversville, N.Y.), freshman Pete Metzler (Lawrence, Kan.), and Eric Wells (Athens, Pa.) all went 2 for 3 on the game.
