Mountaineer Baseball Splits With Eagles

NASHUA, N.H. - The Southern Vermont baseball team split a New England Collegiate Conference doubleheader with the Daniel Webster College Eagles in a 10-7 loss and a 8-3 win Saturday at Harvey Woods Field. The last time the Mountaineers won nine games in a season was in 1989 under Coach Bill Epstein in which the Southern Vermont field is named after.

Southern Vermont jumped ahead early scoring two runs in the first inning when Eric Wells (Athens, Pa.) singled in Dan Cook (Watervliet, N.Y.) who had singled earlier in the first. Pat Warrington (Folcroft, Pa.) got an RBI single sending Adam Northup (Richmond, R.I.) home safely.

After a scoreless first for the Eagles the Mountaineers had a few more breaks with an error from the DWC right fielder giving Brett Pawlak (Shelton, Conn.) and Keith Diotte (Cambridge, N.Y.) a free pass home to make it 4-0 SVC.

In the third Kory Kiro got the Eagles on the board with an RBI single to make it 4-1. The Mountaineers scored one more in the fourth to make it 5-1 with an RBI single by Northup.

Starting SVC pitcher Tim Johnson (Bernardsville, N.J.) got in a little trouble in the fourth inning as Daniel Webster knocked in three runs and again in the sixth when the Eagles tallied up a six run sixth to take the lead for good 10-5.

The Eagles rallied with six runs on eight hits in the bottom of the sixth keyed by back-to-back RBI singles from Peter Plansky and Nate Marshall and a Kiro's triple.

The Mountaineers could only muster up two runs in the seventh when freshman Diotte smashed a triple to the fence scoring Pete Metzler (Lawrence, Kan.) and Andrew Morin (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.) to make it what would be the final score of 10-7.

Wells, Cook, Warrington, Northup, and Diotte each had two hits in the loss. Diotte led SVC with two RBI. Johnson (2-4) picked up the loss pitching five and two thirds striking out four, walking two, and giving up six runs. Kiro got the complete game win for the Eagles striking out seven while giving up five runs.

In game two the Mountaineers once again jumped ahead early with a two run third inning. Morin scored on a Daniel Webster error and Dave Gage (Gloversville, N.Y.) reached on a fielder's choice sending home Metzler to make it 2-0 in SVC's favor. In the fourth Wells knocked an RBI single sending Johnson home safely giving Southern Vermont a 3-0 lead.

In the sixth Warrington smashed an RBI single and Metzler got an RBI when he reached on a fielder's choice to make it 5-0 giving the Mountaineers a nice cushion. An SVC error and three Eagle hits made it 5-3 and a close game going into the seventh inning. A three run seventh put the icing on the cake for Southern Vermont ending a four game skid.

In the nightcap, Andrew Morin paced the Mountaineers going 3-for-3 including a two-run double in the seventh that broke open a 5-3 game to help ice the victory. Johnson went 2-for-4 and scored three runs.

Northup (4-2) earned the victory, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits, striking out nine and walking one. Michaud (1-6) took the loss, allowing eight runs on 11 hits as the Eagles committed four errors.

McKenzie led the Eagles with two hits including a double, while Leary knocked in two with a two-run double in the sixth. Plansky added two hits and added a sac fly RBI.
