NEW LONDON, CONN.---Mitchell Baseball took two from future New England Athletic Conference foe Southern Vermont College at Alumni Field on Saturday afternoon. The Pequots won the first half of the double header 13-11 and the second 18-3. The wins move Mitchell to 3-7 overall and SVC to 1-15.
The Mountaineers led the majority of game one, pulling out to an 10-0 lead after just two innings of play. SVC got things rolling in the first with a two out double from freshman catcher Dan Cook (Watervliet, NY). Freshman Adam Northup (Richmond, RI) followed with a home run over the right field fence. The second inning was more of the same, the Mountaineers tallied 8 runs on 7 hits and one error. Mitchell capitalized on four SVC errors in the third to pull within a pair and then re-awakened their offense again in the sixth when they scored five more to take the lead. The Pequots allowed SVC to cross the plate just one final time in the top of the seventh. Mitchell freshman Paul Martinez (New London, CT) recorded his first win of his career. Martinez entered in the top of the fifth inning for the Pequots, giving up one run on two hits, walking one and striking out four.
Mitchell picked up their bats right where they left off in game two. The Pequots opened with a six run first inning, led by freshman Clayton Boegler's (Somerset, MA) lead-off double. Freshman John McGarry (Waterford, CT) knocked out a key double in the first inning for the Pequots. Senior shortstop Seth Nowakowski (Preston, CT) smoked a two run homer to left center with two outs in the third inning.
Boegler finished game two three for five and tallied six hits total for the day. Freshman Jeff Perillo (Newington, CT) finished game two three for with two doubles and three RBI's. Earning the win for the Pequots on the mound was freshman Cody Faddis (Muskogee, OK). Faddis gave up three runs on eight hits, two walks and six strike outs.
Mitchell will return to the field on Monday, March 24 for a nine inning match up with Riviera College at 3:30 PM. Southern Vermont will host Mercy College in Bennington on Tuesday at 3:00 PM.
