Gage Not Running on Empty; SVC Baseball Drops Heartbreaker

BENNINGTON, Vt. - Freshman second baseman Dave Gage (Gloversville, NY/Broadalbin) extended his hitting streak to 10 games, but the Southern Vermont College Mountaineers fell, 14-10, to Williams College on Senior Day in an NCAA Division III non-conference baseball game played on SVC's campus at Bill Epstein Field.

Gage registered three hits, two RBIs, two runs scored and sparked a rally in the eighth that tied the game. He doubled to lead off the inning and was driven home by freshman first baseman Tim Johnson (Bernardsville, NJ/Bernards).

The green and white took the game to the tenth, but Williams posted a four-spot to break the 10-10 deadlock.

The two seniors, who are both captains did nothing to disappoint. Dan Bosely (Keene, NH/Keene) pitched out of jams all day and had a misleading stat line. The right-hander tallied five strikeouts. He allowed ten runs, but only five were earned. A costly error led to a grand slam. The other senior, Steve Nappi (Portland, ME/Portland) had a career day. Nappi singled three times and scored a run. The three hits were a career high.

SVC scored the first seven runs of the game, but the visitors pumped home seven in the top of the fourth. From there, the game proved to be a pitchers duel until the tenth.

Will Foland (Averill Park, NY/Averill Park) had a career-best three hits. The freshman outfielder scored twice and knocked home two more. Johnson totaled two RBIs and scored a run. He blasted a home run over the right centerfield fence.

The SVC baseball team will be back in action Thursday in Burlington against Saint Michael's College for a 3:30 first pitch.
