Bennington, VT- The Southern Vermont College Mountaineer baseball team defeated the Green Knights of Vermont Technical College, 6-3, in a collegiate game played at Bill Epstein Field.
The Mountaineers used a four-run fifth inning and a two-run eighth to win the game. The squad was paced by freshman catcher Dan Cook (Watervliet, NY) who went 3-3 on the day. Brett Pawlak (Ansonia, CT), Tim Johnson (Bernardsville, NJ), and Steve Nappi (Portland, ME) all also had two-hit days.
Southern Vermont scored their first runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth when Dan Bosely (Keene, NH) drew a bases-loaded walk. Then Nappi and Will Foland (Averill Park, NY) combined for back-to-back singles to give the Mountaineers a 4-2 lead.
In the eighth, with the Mountaineers leading 4-3, Eric Gardner (Thompson, CT) led the inning off with a single and scored on a Pawlak base knock. Pawlak added an insurance run later in the inning on a Johnson RBI hit.
On the mound, John Wallner (Manchester, VT) tallied the victory for the Mountaineers. Wallner pitched five innings only allowing two hits and striking out four. Johnson came into the game in the sixth and didn't allow a run in the final four innings earning himself his first save of the 2008 campaign.
For the Green Knights, Greg Butler, Jordan Hodge, Julian Kempten, and Blake Wright all recorded a base-hit. Butler, Hodge, and Jeff Savage scored Vermont Tech's three runs.
On the season Cook leads the Mountaineers with in batting average (.327), hits (16), and RBI's(eight). Tim Johnson and Brett Pawlak also have .293 and .283 batting averages, respectively.
The green and white are back in action Wednesday at Middlebury College for a 3 p.m. first pitch.
