Baseball Can't Leave Virginia Alone, Falls in Four Straight

Lexington,VA- The Southern Vermont Mountaineers baseball team started their 2008 campaign with a trip to Lexington, VA this weekend. On Saturday, the Mountaineers played the Knights of Southern Virginia University and Sunday they took the field to play the Washington and Lee Generals. SVC came home on the short side this weekend, falling in all four games.

Saturday, Southern Virginia hosted the Mountaineers for a double header. SVC fell in both contests by the score of 12-4 and 21-2. In the first game the Mountaineers struck early when a pair of walks sandwiched an Eric Gardner (Thompson, CT/Tourtelette) hit and an error from the Knights helped the Mountaineers to a 2-0 lead. Southern Virginia bounced back by scoring in each of the first five innings including six runs in the third inning. Steve Nappi (Portland, ME/ Portland HS) led the Mountaineers with a pair of hits and an RBI. In game two the lone highlight for the Mountaineers was a two run double from Dan Cook (Watervliet, NY/ Watervliet HS)

Sunday the Mountaineers fell again this time to the Washington and Lee Generals 17-0 and 11-2. The first game saw the Mountaineers scatter four hits. SVC was able to keep the game close through five innings only trailing 7-0 before the Generals exploded for 10 runs in the bottom of the sixth. In the second game Dave Gage ( Gloversville, NY/ Broadalbin-Perth HS) connected for two of the three hits for the Mountaineers in an 11-2 loss.

The green and white return to action Saturday in Fort Myers, Florida for the Gene Cusic Classic. The team will play nine games in eight days with the first at 6:00 p.m. Saturday against the Nittany Lions of Penn State-Abington.
