Johnson Homers For Second Straight Game, Baseball Falls

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College baseball team scored 13 runs in the final three innings to pull away for a 14-4 victory versus Southern Vermont College on Thursday at Doc Jacobs Field.

Senior Kyle Gingras (Pittsfield, N.H./Pittsfield) improved to 2-0 on the season with six innings of two-run ball, allowing six hits and zero walks while fanning four batters. Freshman Ed Hakey (Saint Albans, Vt./Bellows Free Academy-Saint Albans) earned his first collegiate save with three innings of relief.

Southern Vermont led 2-1 through 5 1/2 innings, with freshman Tim Johnson's (Bernardsville, N.J.) solo home run in the fourth inning the big blow. The Purple Knights, however, scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 6-2 lead, then broke the game open with a six-run seventh inning.

Senior John Kunkel (Loudonville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) doubled, singled twice and drove in four runs to lead Saint Michael's. Freshman Andrew Utrup (Delphos, Ohio/Fort Jennings) earned his first three collegiate base hits and scored three times. Junior Joe Gil (Andover, Mass./Andover) had a pinch-hit, two-run single in the seventh inning, and added an RBI double in the eighth inning.

For SVC, sophomore Kyle Hoseit (Saco, Maine) singled twice, but took the loss in relief of starter Adam Northup (Richmond, R.I.), who pitched five-plus innings of two-hit ball.

The squad returns to action Saturday at noon for a double header with Maine Presque Isle.
