Bennington, VT-The Southern Vermont College baseball team left 14 runners on base in an 8-1 loss to the Panthers of Middlebury College in a non-conference collegiate NCAA Division III baseball contest played on the SVC campus at Bill Epstein Field.
Middlebury's (3-7) pitching combination of Steve Shortle (Rutland, VT), Robert Palladino (Belmont, MA), Tom Sullivan (Suagus, MA) and Andrew Somberg (Florham Park, NJ) scattered six hits.
Sophomore shortstop Brett Pawlak (Anosonia, CT) and freshman designated hitter Adam Northup (Richmond, RI) had two hits apiece for SVC (2-16). Northup knocked in freshman catcher Dan Cook (Watervliet, NY) for SVC's lone run.
Middlebury was led by five players who had two-hit games. Catcher Nick Lefeber (Branford, CT) had two hits and scored two runs. Second baseman Gabe Broughton (Barrington, IL) tallied two knocks and an RBI. First baseman Mark Shimrock (Lansdale, PA) registered a double and a triple to go along with an RBI and two runs scored. Third baseman John Lanahan (Jacksonsville, FL) contributed two singles and an RBI. Rightfielder Tyler Lohman scored two runs and cracked two singles.
Up next for Southern Vermont College, is a Saturday noon doubleheader at home versus Lasell College. Middlebury will travel to Middletown, Connecticut to play Wesleyan also on Saturday at noon.
