Fort Myers, FL-The Southern Vermont College baseball team tallied its first win of the season in a doubleheader split with Finlandia University. The green and white won the first game 6-5 in 10 innings, but lost the nightcap 16-2.
Finlandia led 5-2 going into the bottom of the sixth inning, but they would score two in the sixth and one in the seventh to send the game to extra innings. In the 10th inning SVC had two out and nobody on before sophomore outfielder John Wallner (Manchester, VT/Burr and Burton) singled and advanced to second on a passed ball. The next batter was sophomore outfielder Eric Gardner (Thompson, CT/Tourtelette) and he singled to score Wallner for win. Freshman Tim Johnson (Bernardsville, NJ/Bernards) registered the win. He pitched a scoreless 10th.
The second game saw SVC score the first two runs before getting shut out the rest of the way.
On the day, Johnson had five hits, three RBIs and scored a run. Wallner added four hits with two runs batted in and a run scored. Gardner had three hits, one of which was a double.
For the season, Wallner leads the team with a .353 average. Johnson stands at .304.
