Southern Vermont College Athletics Mission Statement
The Southern Vermont College Athletic Department’s mission is 3-pronged and simple. We strive to:
- Help our student-athletes achieve athleticism – the proficient synergy of mind and body;
- Teach our student-athletes respect – for self, for others, and for the environment;
- See to it that our student-athletes succeed academically – to leave SVC with a diploma in hand.
Southern Vermont College Athletics Philosophy Statement
Embodied in our 3-pronged mission of athleticism, respect, and academic success are six core values: integrity, positive attitude, commitment, responsibility, preparation, and sportsmanship.
To have integrity is to be honest to those around you and to oneself, to keep one’s word, and to live one’s beliefs and values. Integrity fosters self-respect and self discipline.
Sporting a positive attitude promotes optimism and a healthy, inclusive environment. It allows one to enjoy the sport and competition while balancing the wins and losses in each game and in life.
We teach commitment because we want our athletes to follow through with all they do. With lack of commitment come unwanted regrets.
Responsibility captures the essence of commitment. We educate our athletes to the benefits of being responsible people. With responsibility come personal growth and accountability.
Preparation, be it for a game, for a class, or for a test is fundamental in nature yet is a hard earned lesson that is essential to success. Our goal is to teach that lesson.
Sportsmanship is the cornerstone of athletics. Practicing sportsmanship teaches life’s lessons on the courts and fields. Without it, athletics no matter the final score, the athlete and the team lose.
Our goal is to teach life-long skills through athletics. We want our student-athletes to leave SVC touting professionalism and a strong work ethic that they can integrate into life, whatever that life may be.
