Nick Haggerty | Inducted 2017
Nick Haggerty, Class of 2012, was a member of a resurging men’s soccer team from 2008-11. In his first year playing for head coach Tim Penrod, the Wyantskill, N.Y. native (Averill Park High School) was part of a crew that went 2-13-1; by the end of his senior season, Haggerty had helped Southern Vermont make it to three-straight New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) postseason tournaments with the latter two resulting in runner-up finishes.
Through 71 career games in the Southern Vermont uniform, Haggerty amassed 51 goals to rank second on the school’s all-time record list; he had the second (17), third (16), and fifth (14) best-ever single season efforts for the Mountaineers in terms of goals scored. He also chalked up the second-most assists in a single campaign when he tallied 13 helpers—just one shy of the top mark—in 2009. That combination allowed him to graduate with 118 career points— just the second SVC player in program history to crack triple digits.
Haggerty’s performance got plenty of notice by the NECC and coaches from across New England. He was named to the All-NECC First Team in 2009, 2010, and 2011 after getting an All-NECC Second Team nod in his freshman season in 2008. He was also selected to the All-Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference DIII New England First Team in ‘09 before being named the NECC Player of the Year in ‘10.
A 2012 graduate with his bachelor’s in Criminal Justice, Haggerty also etched his name into SVC men’s volleyball history as the program was still getting on its feet. He had the best season ever for a Mountaineer in the digs column as he popped up 325 in 2012—that mark helping him graduate at first and currently ranks fifth on the all-time career digs list. That season, he was voted the NECC Defensive Player of the Year.
