Picturesque New Soccer Field on Southern Vermont College's Campus
BENNINGTON, Vt. - The Southern Vermont College men's and women's soccer teams will have a soccer field on campus for the 2008-2009 school year and beyond.
Thanks in large part to a donation by Sarah Everett McCowan, Everett Field will by ready for play by the fall season.
"This is the first of several important projects we are undertaking here at SVC this summer and fall," said Southern Vermont College President Karen Gross. "The new field is important to us for several reasons: it shows our deep commitment to our invigorated athletic program, it enables games to be played on campus so the SVC community can cheer the teams on, it allows our student-athletes to practice on campus, and finally it is a wonderful way to start our relationship with our new athletic conference, the New England Collegiate Conference."
The process is an arduous undertaking that will require the ground to be leveled and the field to be seeded. In the end, it should be the view that takes your breath away.
"Everett Field will be a great home field advantage," said SVC Director of Athletics Benjamin Kozik. "Between the mountains and the sight line to the town of Bennington it will be hard for the players and fans to focus on the game."
While many people will be gathered for the lid lifter in a little under three months, sadly the woman who is largely responsible for the new field will not.
"The spectacular views from the field will be a wonderful tribute to the vision of Mrs. McCowan who has passed away since the time of her gift," said Dean of Advancement Karen Trubitt. "We wish she could have been with us see students at play on the field, but we will be thrilled to share news of the project's completion with members of her family."
The first game on the new field will be August 31 when the
Mountaineers' men's soccer team hosts the Delaware Valley College
for a 1:00 p.m. start.
Southern Vermont College is an NCAA Divison III member, who
