BENNINGTON, Vt. – Southern Vermont College Athletics is eager to celebrate the NCAA’s DIII Week starting Monday with a handful of programs and events.

Division III Week is a positive opportunity for all individuals associated with Division III to observe and celebrate the impact of athletics and of student-athletes on the campus and surrounding community. During the week, every Division III school and conference office is encouraged to conduct a type of outreach activity that falls into one of three categories: academic accomplishment; athletic experience; or leadership/community service/campus involvement.

“We’re excited to participate in DIII Week,” said SVC Director of Athletics Sharief Hashim. “The week allows us to highlight the outstanding efforts of our student-athletes, staff, and coaches in completing service projects which support the Bennington community.”

Throughout the week, SVC Athletics will undergo a social media takeover in which two different student-athletes will be operating the Department’s Twitter (@theSVCathletics) and Instagram (@svc_athletics) accounts each day.

On two days, local restaurants will team up Southern Vermont to raise funds for the Bennington County Child Advocacy Center. A portion of all sales from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday night at Ramunto’s Pizza on Main Street will be donated to the CAC, as well as a percentage of all sandwiches sold at The Elm Street Market on Friday; ESM’s special that day will be The Mountaineer.

Tuesday will see the SVC men’s soccer team head to Arlington’s Fisher School where the Mountaineers will spend some time reading to the area’s elementary students. On Wednesday, Southern Vermont student-athletes will visit Bennington Elementary School to speak with students in grades 3-5 about the value of participating in sports; the Mountaineers will also spend part of the morning playing their respective game with the kids during their physical education block.

Saturday, during its Senior Day, women’s lacrosse will get an SVC faculty member involved in the action with a guest coach for its 12 p.m. New England Collegiate Conference matchup against Becker College. Reneé Merges, an assistant criminal justice professor in the College’s Donald Everett Axinn Division of Social Sciences, will join the Mountaineers on the sideline and get an inside look at what goes on in the bench area and team huddles during a match.

Additional tentative programs include a guest speaker for the student-athletes and an open gym evening involving Southern Vermont faculty and staff members.
